Deepening into our relationships with the More-Than-Human-World.
Sometimes the easiest way to begin to explain what something is, is by explaining what it isn't! Forest therapy is not hiking or exercise, it is not a basic walk in the park, either. It is not group therapy, nor is it a nature walk where you'll receive lessons about the flora and fauna of the region (though I really love all of those things too!!). Forest Therapy is a research-based relational practice that brings people into deeper intimacy with natural places and the More than Human World; one of those natural places being our natural selves.
Forest therapy provides opportunities, called invitations, which are designed to support the renewal and strengthening of relationships and therefore connections between people & place, people & people, and person & self. Forest Therapy is also a health and wellness practice that supports every aspect of our well-being including, but not limited to: boosted immune function, cardiovascular health, respiratory health, attention restoration, improved mental health (reduction in depression and anxiety). Restoration of relationships and personal wellness is created as a result of spending time in liminality while in nature. A certified Forest Therapy Guide opens doors to liminality by following a research-based sequence of invitations. Want to read more about liminality and restoration? Click here.
When we spend time in nature, slowing down, and observing with our five senses, nature reciprocates with myriad of health benefits.
“If our health is the gift we may receive from Nature, and ecological repair and renewal is our reciprocation, then we might consider our relationship to the beings of the forest as an act of devotion that ensures we may never forget our interconnectedness again. “If our health is the gift we may receive from Nature, and ecological repair and renewal is our reciprocation, then we might consider our relationship to the beings of the forest as an act of devotion that ensures we may never forget our interconnectedness again. The highest promise of our devotion is not an outcome, it is a feeling of our connected-ness, appreciation and responsibility for all beings we share this planet with. This feeling is in danger of being lost and forgotten, amongst the taming of our human cultures, but it can be remembered and preserved through this practice. It is my hope that we will honor and cherish it, so that our devotion is in service to the generations of all beings yet to come in this world. To renew this relationship is the core premise of the ANFT Forest Therapy practice. The health benefits are a bonus, a reciprocation." - Amos Clifford, ANFT Founder (2013)

We came to this planet for a reason. Much is left to be discovered in nature, including the pockets of ourselves that are hidden in ways only the natural world can reveal. Using the five senses, a Forest Therapy Practice invites a deep embodiment of self as we allow ourselves to interact with the More-Than-Human-World in ways other than intellectualization. In this way we open to novel ways of knowing others, which inevitably leads to a greater embodiment of ourselves. Nature is the greatest mentor through good times, bad times, and in between times too. It listens patiently, and shares in ways that match our internal world.
There is a powerful urgency to become part of a group that cocreates something greater than its parts. Having a healthy community is part of healthy living. Let's build upon our community of Forest Bathing Fanatics in Chico and the greater area.
I like to answer this question with another question: why might you like a guide during meditation, yoga, strength training, tutoring, or prayer? We are allowed to go deeper into a practice when there is someone else with one foot out and one foot in. When we don't have to use the executive part of our brain, it frees us to go elsewhere in ourselves. Give the gift of a guide to yourself in the forest sometime. I believe you'll feel the difference. Here are some more concrete reasons:
Let go of time and be present, Leave decisions to someone else, Get out of your head and into senses, Do things you've never thought to do, Meet edges you wouldn't choose on your own, Share your experiences with others, Go deeper, Feel part of a community, Build natural relationships, Make it a practice.
I suppose my answer to this question would also come in the form of a question. Why do we join groups to exercise, learn, socialize, pray and practice our faith, travel, etc.? Human development and growth does not occur naturally in the absence of other humans. While solitude in nature is desired and absolutely a part of the Forest Therapy experience, listening to and sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences with others is the mortar for the bricks that are laid during this practice. That being said, private walks in nature are incredibly powerful also, and I do offer private Forest Therapy Walks as a service. You can book an appointment by clicking on the Services link at the top of the page.
Circles are a universal, pan-cultural symbol of unity, inclusivity and the infinite nature of energy. Forest Therapy is a relational practice whose aim is a greater sense of embodiment of ones own wholeness, as well as the greater wholeness and connectedness of all of life on Earth, therefore the circle supports the development of this connectedness of interbeing.
During Forest Therapy you are invited to participate in invitations that support the opening of your five senses to the forest offerings. After each invitation is the opportunity to share what you are noticing. What's important to know about invitations and sharing is that ALL IS WELCOME. This means that if you feel you'd like to modify an invitation to meet a different want or need you have, or if you'd like to share with body movement, song, or just silence rather than words, that is perfectly welcomed. This practice is first and foremost meant to support you in feeling safe and supported, and this starts with choice.
These two terms are often used interchangably. However a comprehensive explanation would be that the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy model of Forest Therapy is slightly different than Forest Bathing (english for Shinrin Yoku) in that it's purpose includes not only mental and physical health benefits, but also the improvement of relationships with the More-Than-Human-World as well as the people we share this planet with and ourselves. See the Forest Therapy Practice page to learn more about Shinrin Yoku and Forest Therapy.
The ANFT model of Forest Therapy is indeed inspired by the Japanese practice called, Shinrin Yoku, translated literally to mean, Forest Bathing. This practice was developed in Japan in the 1980's in response the national health crisis that developed as a result of their rapid ttransition from a farming and agricultural industry to a technological industry which brought their people indoors, resulting in widespread physical and mental health degradation.
Not convinced about why this practice is significant yet? Listen to Forest Medicine expert, Dr. Qing Li, from Japan explain the benefits of this practice.
Learn about the volatile organic compounds, called phytoncides, which increase our Natural Killer cell count when we walk in the woods.
Even watching nature scenes on a screen helps to shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic nervous system functions.
